Chapter 5
When Winston ratted out on Julia by giving her name while being tortured, in order to stop the torture, I think he was being a coward. On the other hand, I can understand why he did that. When fear comes into place, you don't bother to think or concentrate on what's going on and just say whatever the person wants. I bet it's happened atleast once to everyone in their life. Winston was just afraid of the rats that O'Brien put in the cage and wanted to get out as soon as possible, so he blamed Julia. I can see me doing that if I was that terrified, but if Winston really loved Julia, he wouldn't have yelled out her name. With him being a coward, he gave in too easily. He ratted on his lover and didn't bother to think of someone elses name to say instead of hers. He could have covered it up somehow. It just shows how weak he really is.
